Food prices have increased by about a 1/3 in the last five years and energy prices are expected to increase by more than 60% by 2016. These expenses are particularly challenging for young people on limited incomes moving into their first homes and trying to be independent, healthy and frugal.

Calman’s Cookwell service has been running cooking groups from Inverness and ___ . At these groups, young people work with our team to create new, affordable recipes every week, meet new people and enjoy what they have made in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere. The positive feedback and engagement that has resulted from Cookwell convinced us that expanding our cooking classes across the Highlands would be an effective use of the our resources.

Our new ‘H-eat well’ project will address food and fuel poverty across the Highlands – from our main base in Inverness we are setting up groups as far afield as Golspie, Alness, Invergordon, Dingwall, Nairn, Aviemore, Portree and Fort William. H-eatwell is a service that is being developed with out partners, Changeworks, who are national experts in fuel efficiency. As a result, H-eatwell will not only help young people learn about nutritious cooking but will give them advice on how to get the most from their energy bills.

H-eatwell will be run by a number of local volunteers who will work alongside our cooking team to deliver the groups. Our hope is that these volunteers will gain the experience and the skills to continue to run the groups unsupported and thus allow our cooking team to expand H-eatwell to even more Highland communities.

Although cooking is our main focus, these groups are multi-purpose. By cooking with young people we can also take the chance to teach them the basics about nutrition and getting value for money. Sitting round a table and talking with other young people and our staff is also a valuable experience in itself for many young people. Finally, every young person who comes along to Heatwell can learn about the other services Calman has to offer, get advice about various practical issues and get signposted to other services that can meet other needs that they may have.
