Opened in 2010, Café Artysans is Calman’s best-known social enterprise. Currently we have over 15 trainees working alongside our professional team to create food and coffee of a gourmet standard both in the restaurant and for our outside catering business. Artysans is also notable in that we roast our own coffee beans on site and customers can buy these beans in-store to take home – every cup of coffee sold at Artysans is the product of a process that requires our trainees to learn and master a range of skills, starting when we receive the unroasted beans in our café and ending when one of our waiting staff brings it to your table.
Located in Strothers Lane, Artysans is in the centre of Inverness and business is brisk. Whilst working at Artysans, trainees get experience fulfilling a number of roles both in the front and back of house. This means that a trainee with no previous experience can, for example, leave Artysans with experience of customer service, food preparation alongside our chef team, preparing gourmet coffee, waiting on tables and managing the front of house. Calman aims to succeed both as a social enterprise and in offering a quality service to the public; Artysans look to challenge and stimulate our trainees whilst simultaneously trying to ensure that every customer receives the award-winning service we have become known for.
The hard work of the team was recently rewarded with the 2013 ‘Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards for Best Bar, Cafe or Restaurant’. This sort of recognition is especially important to our social enterprises as we hope that, first and foremost, our enterprises can compete with other high-street outlets on an equal basis. By placing them in an award-winning team we try to ensure that those leaving Artysans are well-placed to secure future employment by supporting them to achieve a track record of excellence and a host of new skills, experiences and confidence to take to the job market.
Any prospective customers wanting to find out more about the café or catering should see Artysan’s commercial website here or by navigating there through the ‘Calman Network’ links on the top right hand side of the site.
